CLIENT’S BRIEF
Our client asked for a kitchen that would be big enough for their extended family, and that encompassed a modern design approach, in line with their home’s contemporary architecture. They wanted modern materials, sharp, clean lines, and a look that played on bold forms. Practically, they requested substantial bench space, ample storage, and a kitchen that related to the interior flow and exterior pool and entertainment areas – all using a clean, crisp palette, with exposed concrete walls as the backdrop.
DESIGNER’S RESPONSE
The island is the major feature in this elongated space. It has an angled leg at the seating end that introduces the desired geometric structure – it also helps to break up the volume of the island. Bead-blasted stainless steel subtly contrasts the white Corian, both under the dramatic angle and also as an upstand behind the hob that doubles as display shelving on the open side of the island.
All appliances on the back wall are integrated into the cabinetry, except for the twin ovens, which were matched to the white colour scheme. A freestanding, barista-style coffee machine and tea making facilities were placed within easy reach, but can be concealed by tall pocket slider doors.
A working scullery behind the wall of cabinetry stores food and products. As the size of this space was limited, deep drawers were designed in the under-stair space expanding the storage capacity. A DishDrawer, second sink, and Ozone tap make this space an ideal clean-up or preparation zone.
LED lighting was kept simple, so as not to detract from the two stunning pendants over the dining table. Beautiful textural timber flooring is a contrast to the monochrome kitchen, allowing the stunning rural and pool outlook to enhance this remarkable kitchen from both sides of the glass.
A design that was merited by being awarded a ‘Finalist’ in the SBID Awards (Society of British International Design).
